Manchester United returned to Victor Lindelof’s former stomping grounds at Benfica and the ball-playing defender showed just why Jose Mourinho bought him.
The Red Devils came away with a 1-0 win over the Portuguese club and despite the players not really getting out of first gear, Lindelof put in a good shift in Phil Jones‘ absence.
Victor had a shaky start to his career at Old Trafford but has since slowly grown into his surroundings as Mourinho helps the youngster adapt.
The tall Swede had his best display in a United shirt and will gain confidence from the performance, helping his team keep a clean sheet away from home.
The former Benfica centre-back will surely be keen to add more starts to his name in the absence of his fellow injured teammates Jones, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo.
Mourinho suddenly looks short in a position that has five senior players who can naturally play there with just two spots open in the first eleven.
Of course there’s also youngster Axel Tuanzebe who has been eager to feature from the sidelines but surely five players should cover that position well enough.
Apparently not as Manchester United are stripped down to their bare bones in the spine of the team as the central midfield and striker positions are short of numbers.
Perhaps these recent injuries adding up have taken their toll on Mourinho’s team who are keen on keeping up their title challenge.
Hopefully the Red Devils will have a full squad available when the Christmas period comes around as the competitions begin to heat up.
