Ander Herrera has expressed his delight at Manchester United’s strong start to their Champions League campaign following the 1-0 win over Benfica in Lisbon.
Jose Mourinho’s men raced to the top of Group A following a 3-0 home win over FC Basel and a 4-1 battering of CSKA Moscow in Russia.
And they all but sealed their passage to the knockout stages with an organised 1-0 win over Benfica hallmarked by Marcus Rashford‘s free-kick 25 minutes from time.
Speaking to MUTV after the game, Herrera was delighted to see Man United succeeding on the biggest of European stages.
“We have nine points and are in the best position possible, so we are very happy,” he said.
“Now, we still have two games at home which are important for us. It’s another clean sheet, we conceded almost no chances which is not easy when you come to Portugal.
“I have played here before and normally they create a lot of chances, but we didn’t let them. Of course we want to keep improving and creating more chances but we are happy with three points and nine points in the group.”
United join Paris Saint Germain, Besiktas, Barcelona and Manchester City as the only teams with a 100% record after three games in the Champions League and have already surpassed the points total managed by Louis van Gaal back in 2015 in just half the time.
In other words, United look comfortable on this stage. Mourinho has been around the European block before and understands the required balance between defence and attack to dominate games without leaving gaps open.
And for all of the attacking pomp on show in this competition, you sense that United’s success on the continental stage will be largely defined by just how compact they can be against better sides in the knockout phases.
