Peter Schmeichel believes that David de Gea gives Manchester United the edge over Manchester City in the title race this season.
The Spaniard has enjoyed a superb start to the 2017/18 campaign, claiming nine clean sheets so far and receiving a place on the Ballon d’Or shortlist.
Pep Guardiola’s side, having been level on points with Man United since week one, currently have a two point lead over United at the top of the table following their demolition of Stoke City over the weekend.
But Schmeichel, speaking on talkSPORT, noted that having a reliable pair of hands between the sticks – somebody who has been there before – would eventually see United eclipse their neighbours in the table.
“You need your goalkeeper to save between 12-15 points to win the Premier League,” he said. “We know De Gea can do that, he’s done more than that.”
“We know with Courtois, he can do that. What we don’t know is with Ederson, can he do that? He’s had a really good start but we are only in October.
“In that respect, I think that Chelsea and Manchester United have a little bit of an edge.”
Ederson has been something of a bystander so far this season, with City spending most of their time eviscerating everything before them at the other end. His only moment in the limelight came when Sadio Mane kicked him in the face and a civil war started on social media for some reason.
But there will come a time, somewhere along the line, when City aren’t four goals clear and coasting, but rather level with 20 minutes left, and it will fall on the former Benfica to make a crucial intervention.
De Gea, of course, has done this on more occasions than United fans would care to mention – most recently at Anfield – but doubt remains over whether the former Benfica man can do the same in his first season in the Premier League.
