Roy Keane: Manchester United have the foundations needed for trophies

by Marwan Harraz

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has explained to fans how their current situation helps them have the foundations to future success.

The Red Devils have put in two back-to-back frustrating displays against Liverpool at Anfield and Benfica away from home in the Champions League.

A dull draw against their fierce rivals was followed by an uninspiring win against the Portuguese club; a far cry from their early season form.

However, the stats don’t lie, United are top of their Champions League group and are only two points away from the top of the Premier League table so they can’t be performing that poorly.

Manchester City meanwhile have continued to blow past opposition, leaving some fans complaining about Jose Mourinho’s style of football.

According to Manchester Evening News Roy Keane said on ITV: “It [Manchester City’s form] will suit the United camp at the moment to let City get all the credit at the moment.

“United are in a sense under the radar, but they are getting results and clean sheets. That gives you the foundations to get trophies.”

Sir Alex Ferguson always spoke about how attacking wins you games but defending wins you trophies and it seems to have been passed on to Keane.

The Old Trafford great also used to say how 1-0 results are the score-line of champions as it showed resilience and a composed head.

Despite all the positives so far, recent matches have left a bitter taste in some fans mouths who wish to return to the run of 4-0 results against teams.

The domination in score-lines have somewhat gone but it’s perhaps fair to say that United’s dominance in games haven’t gone.

Jose Mourinho’s game management has been incredible and the players have learnt well from their manager, having yet to be truly uncomfortable during any match so far this season.

Liverpool and Benfica had their moments but United never seemed out of control and once all their injured players are back, they can return to dominating results once more.
