Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing the left-back in the hopes that he can fill in the hugely rotated position.
The former Barcelona defender moved to Benfica in 2015 for €1.5 million and faced the Red Devils during the 1-0 win of the Portuguese team.
Apparently his performance has impressed Jose Mourinho and the manager has given the green light to chase Alex Grimaldo’s signature.
Portuguese newspaper, Record, are the source of the transfer rumour but it’s no surprise to see a Portuguese newspaper link a Portuguese club’s player to a Portuguese manager.
However, it wouldn’t be surprising either if the rumour is true as the left-back position has been a problem area for Mourinho since his arrival.
Young perhaps has been head and shoulders above the others but the Englishman is a veteran player at the moment and Jose probably doesn’t seem him as a long term solution.
Shaw was brought to United initially to solve the left-back crisis but has failed to perform consistently and claim the position.
It’s fair to say that since Patrice Evra’s departure the club have never truly had a great defender in that area of the pitch and perhaps Mourinho is finally fed up.
Grimaldo would represent a smart, bargain buy and as a natural full-back should give real competition to Shaw should the Englishman ever step up.
