Championship side Aston Villa are desperate to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, manager Steve Bruce has revealed.

Johnstone, 24, is on loan at Villa Park for the second consecutive season, playing under the Man United great.

Despite obvious ability, the brilliance of Man United’s current goalkeepers means Johnstone will not make it at Old Trafford, he is yet to make a first team appearance for the club.

“We will do everything in our power to get him here permanently,” Bruce said.

“He is going to find it difficult at United to break through because of what they have got so we are hopeful.”

Not only do United have David de Gea, arguably the world’s best goalkeeper, but they also have Argentine Sergio Romero as backup, as well as Joel Pereira, the Portuguese goalkeeping talent who Jose Mourinho backed to be the best in his generation from his country.

Bruce compare Johnstone to De Gea, though. “His save is as good a save as I have seen for a very long time.

“It was up there with the De Gea save, a reflex stop.

“Sam has done fantastic in the last 12 months. It is typical of a young player.

“It took him time to adapt but given time he looks a very, very good goalkeeper.”

Johnstone will likely be allowed to leave United, and there was a chance of him joining Villa permanently this summer, but the Championship side reportedly couldn’t meet United’s price. Englishman’s contract runs out this summer, and at the age of 24, he will be allowed to leave United for free.
