Manchester United travelling squad for Swansea City clash in EFL Cup revealed

by Harry Robinson

David De Gea has been rested for Manchester United’s EFL Cup away tie at Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Paul Pogba is yet to return from injury, but Phil Jones is in the squad despite picking up a quad injury against Huddersfield Town in Saturday afternoon’s shock 2–1 defeat in the Premier League. Jones was forced off after 23 minutes, replaced by Victor Lindelof, but left the John Smith’s Stadium without crutches.

Midfielder Nemanja Matic is not given a rest despite playing almost every minute for club and country this season, with Man United in the midst of a midfield injury crisis. All three of Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick unavailable.

Argentine shot stopper Sergio Romero will likely start in place of De Gea, with his understudies is Joel Pereira and Kieran O’Hara.

Young centre-back and last year’s Reserves Player of the Year winner, Axel Tuanzebe, is in the squad as one of four central defensive options.

Luke Shaw is in the squad travelling to Wales as he looks to make his way back into the United first-team under Jose Mourinho.

Scott McTominay, who made his UEFA Champions League debut in a 1–0 victory against Benfica last week, could make his second start for United as one of only three central midfield options alongside Matic and Ander Herrera.
