Luke Shaw delighted with return to first team action against Swansea City

Luke Shaw has expressed his delight after making his second first team appearance of the season during Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Swansea City in the League Cup on Tuesday night.

The Englishman, who missed pre-season and the opening stages of the 2017/18 campaign through injury, made his first appearance of the season against Burton Albion last month.

And following another prolonged period away from the first team, Shaw was finally given a chance to impress in South Wales, replacing Anthony Martial for the closing stages.

Shaw took to social media after the game to congratulate goalscorer Jesse Lingard and register his delight at being handed some time on the pitch.

Discerning where exactly Shaw stands with Jose Mourinho is difficult. On one hand, the fact that the Portuguese expressed no concrete interest in a left-back over the summer, along with his recent decision to include the 22-year-old in the trip to Lisbon last week, could indicate a plan to slowly but surely phase him back into the squad.

And yet, on the other hand, there is an unavoidable sense that Shaw still lies miles down the pecking order under Mourinho. His prospects for this season continue to look grim; this is not, you sense, the same form of ostracising – the developmental kind – imposed on Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Victor Lindelof by the 54-year-old.
