Jose Mourinho has hinted towards the prospect of handing Jesse Lingard further opportunities at No.10 this season following his decisive display against Swansea City on Tuesday night.
The 24-year-old has been a peripheral figure so far this season, making just three starts prior to the clash at the Liberty Stadium.
But he made a big statement to his boss with a sprightly display at No.10 during which he scored two superb goals to send Manchester United through to the League Cup quarter-finals.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho noted that he was pleased with the way Lingard operated within United’s attacking dynamic in Wales.
“We played with two strikers with a lot of enthusiasm and it was a good dynamic. We are trying to defend our cup to the maximum we can and now we go to the quarter-finals. That’s it and we are happy.”
The best footballers adapt their styles in accordance with the situation at hand and Lingard need to do exactly that this season.
His days out wide appear to be over: Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Ashley Young are all preferred ahead of him and he will need to take advantage of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s current barrel spell if he is to forge his way back into Mourinho’s starting XI.
