Ryan Giggs urges Manchester United fans to be patient with Victor Lindelof

Ryan Giggs has urged Manchester United fans to have patience with new signing Victor Lindelof following the Swede’s poor start to life at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old, who arrived in June for £31m, has failed to breach Mourinho’s Premier League plans so far this season.

His display at Huddersfield, which saw him culpable for both goals in a 2-1 defeat, combined with a shaky first half against Swansea City in the League Cup has led to many supporters questioning his capacity to succeed at this level.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Giggs called on Man United fans to support – rather than berate – the defender as he continues to acclimatise at Old Trafford.

“One player who has attracted a lot of criticism is Victor Lindelof but he certainly shouldn’t be written off yet,” he said.

“Some players come to the Premier League and bed in straight away and others can take six months or even a year, as it was for Patrice Evra, Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic, and they went on to be unbelievable players.

“You win together and lose together and you can’t single out a player, especially when he hasn’t been playing regularly. He’s just got to knuckle down and come through this.”

Lindelof will be feeling pretty down at this moment in time. Nobody likes to feel as if they’re on the periphery of anything, seemingly unable to do what others manage without much thought, and you can be sure he has spent some time doubting himself.

This is what a club of United’s stature can do. The Premier League serves as a completely different environment to the Primeira Liga and you can see through his expression and body language that his confidence is in the gutter – something Marcus Rashford picked up on against Swansea.

But for all the uncertainty and gloominess swirling in his mind, Lindelof has a straightforward decision to make: either pack it in and go out on loan, or continue to work, improve and demonstrate why Mourinho signed him in the first place.
