Ander Herrera as insisted he Has a quote fantastic relationship quote with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.
Reports suggested otherwise after Herrera commented that he and his teammates’ attitude was poor in a shock 2-1 defeat to Huddersfield Town in the Premier League last weekend.
Immediately after Herrera had made those comments, Mourinho commented his displeasure at the fact that even his players could admit that their attitude was not good enough. The Portuguese was reportedly genuinely shocked by his team’s performance at the John Smith’s Stadium.
“We have a fantastic relationship,” Herrera insisted. “But what I said was that in the first 30 minutes they had a better attitude than us.”
“That’s what happened. But after that, we had a good attitude and we were even close to drawing the game, which is not so easy after playing bad the first 30 minutes.
“But now we want to forget what happened on Saturday.
“We want to move forward for a massive game against Tottenham and try to win.
“After the defeat at Huddersfield, we needed good feelings back, because when you lose a game you want to play as quick as possible and play well.”
It’s a tricky situation, because while a part of you as a United fan admires the honesty of Herrera to come out and admit the attitude was not good enough, in some ways it would better if he had said he and his teammates simply played badly.
Having the wrong attitude playing for United isn’t acceptable, while a rare bad game or two is. Ultimately, though, the only way to improve is to admit and learn from your mistakes, and Herrera is doing that publicly by admitting the attitude was poor.
