Manchester United fans impressed with Ashley Young’s performance vs Tottenham

by Marwan Harraz

Manchester United hosted Tottenham at Old Trafford in what wasn’t the most vintage performance but a few players came out of the match with their reputations in tact and Ashley Young was one of them.

The veteran Englishman filled in at the left-back spot playing more as a wing back as he bombed forward with no wide support.

Jose Mourinho lined up his men in a 3-5-2 formation, asking a lot from Young and Antonio Valencia but it was the former Watford man who stood out.

With no Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford ahead of him, Ashley took it upon himself to provide most of United’s width.

Comfortable with beating his man and crossing a dangerous ball into the box, the pacy defender showed the Old Trafford faithful just what they’ve been missing out on the left flank.

United headed into the break with nothing to show for their efforts despite a good start to the fierce encounter.

Many expected Mourinho to set his players up in a typically defensive fashion but instead the Portuguese tactician opted for a more positive performance.

The Red Devils weren’t at their best and sorely miss Paul Pogba but there were some impressive pieces of play when the players did decide to notch it up a gear.

Jose’s men weren’t in top gear for consistent periods of time but there was enough on show to suggest that United may have found themselves a new formation to work with more often in future games.
