Alex McLeish: Romelu Lukaku has been starved of service from Manchester United

Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku isn’t to blame for his lack of goals against top opposition according to former Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish.

The Belgian striker has failed to score in his past three Premier League matches with most critics using it as proof of his inability to finish vs the best in the business.

United have faced both Tottenham and Liverpool in recent weeks and Lukaku couldn’t find the net against either, although he did set up Anthony Martial for the winner vs the London club.

Despite all the criticism thrown at Romelu, McLeish believes it’s not necessarily the forward’s fault and calls for more from the Red Devils.

Jose Mourinho’s big game approach has also been criticised for it’s lack of risk taking which has often left the former Everton man isolated.

According to Squawka, Alex said on on BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Friday Football Social: “Romelu Lukaku has been starved of service for one or two games. He is quick and strong I’ve got no doubt he is going to be a sensation for Manchester United.

“It’s hard to criticise the guy’s overall game. He’s been in England for a long time and has phenomenal experience in the toughest league in the world – that will reap dividends for United.”

Perhaps it was the clinical striker’s isolation that tempted Mourinho into partnering him alongside Marcus Rashford against Tottenham.

The tactical tweak did see an improved performance overall from the team but it didn’t necessarily get Lukaku far more involved in matches.

Hopeful hoofs up field was all that Romelu received for his teammates and it’s likely that United’s issues are from midfield.

Paul Pogba’s absence has been particularly missed as the Red Devils lack his attacking impetus, especially after his good start to the season.

Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic hardly make the most attacking of midfield duos and even Marouane Fellaini‘s return from injury would be welcome at this point.
