Jose Mourinho has explained why Luke Shaw has hardly had much game time at Manchester United this season despite being fit.
The former Southampton man has been criticised by his manager plenty of times during his career under the Portuguese and there are worries that Shaw won’t succeed at Old Trafford.
Struggling with injuries, fitness issues and apparent attitude problems, the young Englishman risks leaving the club much the same way his former friend and teammate Memphis Depay has.
Depay arrived at United with high hopes of becoming a club icon but his mentality issues apparently stagnated his career until he left for France.
Luke currently faces the same problems of being phased out and Mourinho has become increasingly impatient with the defender.
According to Squawka, Jose said: “He has a future here but the situation is not easy because he comes from injury after injury after injury he needs two, three, four, five or six matches in a row to play, to make mistakes, to get condition, to get match fitness and I cannot give him that.
“If he was a central midfielder then yes, because we only have two but at left back we have so many options. So the situation is not easy. But he is in the squad, he works and maybe the opportunity comes.”
Despite being the only natural left-back at the club, Shaw must fight for his position with a number of senior squad players.
Easily the most unsettled area of the pitch for the Red Devils, Jose is clearly looking for one of these players to stand out, otherwise he will surely invest when summer comes around.
Unfortunately for Shaw, it appears that Young is currently the manager’s favourite and impressed in his performance vs Tottenham.
The veteran former winger may not be the best solution for United’s left-back woes but so long as he maintains his impressive form, there’s no real reason to rotate.
Luke really only has this season left to fight for his Manchester United career and the clock is certainly ticking.
