Jose Mourinho provides Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo injury update

Jose Mourinho has reiterated that he has “no idea” about how close Paul Pogba is to making a return to action at Manchester United but confirmed that Marcos Rojo should feature following the international break.

Pogba suffered a hamstring injury against FC Basel last month and has spent recent weeks working with his private team in the United States before returning to Carrington last week.

And Rojo, sidelined with knee ligament damage since April, has been working with the first team over the next few weeks as he steps up his recovery process.

Speaking soon after the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, the 54-year-old noted that the Argentine would return soon whilst adding, perhaps with an air of frustration, that he couldn’t give any update on Pogba.

“Again, I have no idea, honestly, I have no idea,” he said. “I have no idea, I’m not in control of his recovery process, he’s not training with me, he’s on individual work and not in my group.

“Even under certain conditions, for example Marcos Rojo is working with me, with certain conditions, but he’s working with me. But I would expect Marcos Rojo to be ready to play after the international break. I can predict that because he’s training with me.

“But Paul, I have no idea.”

Mourinho obviously doesn’t like members of his first team squad choosing to observe their recovery process outside of his sphere of influence and perception. This is a man who needs to be ubiquitous in every sense – always there to take note of the finer details.

But Pogba has always been somebody who does things in his own way. And with reports suggesting the 24-year-old could be fit to return for the clash with Chelsea, you sense that the Frenchman, despite being under the gaze of his boss, has made quick progress in the United States.

And supporters will be delighted to see that, following another sturdy defensive display over the weekend, the back line will only be further emboldened over the next few weeks by Rojo’s return.
