Dimitar Berbatov has hailed Manchester United forward Anthony Martial as ‘special’.
The Frenchman was in confident form on Tuesday night as Man United beat Portuguese champions Benfica in the UEFA Champions League.
The 21-year-old tore apart Benfica on the left flank with a number of sublime runs culminating in chances in the 18-yard box, including winning the Reds a penalty, which he subsequently saw saved.
“When I see Anthony Martial on the team sheet I know I’ll see something special,” Berbatov enthused on BT Sport.
“I know I won’t fall asleep.”
Martial is certainly a player to get United fans off their seats, or keep their eyelids from shutting as Berbatov says.
His footwork sends defenders spinning, particularly in the box where he can hardly be stopped by defenders scared of giving away a penalty as they did in the first half.
Martial missed a couple of good chances, including from the spot and after being fed through by Romelu Lukaku, but was consistently positive.
This was a rare start for Martial, and he was replaced by Marcus Rashford in the second half. Rashford made an instant impact, earning United’s second penalty of the evening which Daley Blind converted after some disagreement over who should take the spot-kick given Martial had left the pitch.
