Eric Bailly has hailed the mentality of Manchester United forward Anthony Martial after the Frenchman scored the winner for the Reds at the weekend.
It’s Martial’s fourth goal from the substitutes bench this season, as he secured a vital win for Man United against Tottenham Hotspur with an 81st-minute strike.
Despite showing some excellent form this season, Martial has been subjected to being on the bench with United manager Jose Mourinho preferring Marcus Rashford.
Defender Bailly hailed United’s squad depth and picked out Martial for his excellent attitude despite being on the bench.
“I think we have a lot of very good players in the squad. When one does not play, the others do,” Bailly said after Saturday’s game.
“The good thing about Anthony is that he is always here to help the team whenever he is needed and he showed that today.
“When Rashford plays, Anthony always has that mentality where he is ready to come on and have an impact – which he did by winning the match.
“Anthony, mentally, is strong and he showed that today. He is happy and whenever he has a chance he takes it as we saw today.”
Martial has played a lot of his minutes this season off the bench. In the 604 minutes he has played, he’s scored six goals and grabbed six assists at a rate of 50 minutes per goal contribution, an outstanding stat.
Whether his winner at Old Trafford on Saturday will have earned him a start against Premier League champions Chelsea next weekend at Stamford Bridge is yet to be seen, but he’s certainly doing as much as he can as a sub. To make things better, his attitude has been spot on this season, never publicly complaining but admitting that he does want to start games.
