Gary Neville slams Marcus Rashford for missing key chance in 1-0 defeat to Chelsea

Gary Neville has criticised Marcus Rashford for ‘shirking it’ as he failed to take Manchester United’s biggest chance in a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea.

The 20-year-old could have put Man United in front against the Premier League champions away from home, but his header floated over the crossbar as Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois came to meet the youngster.

Rashford closed his eyes as Courtois came to punch the cross away, and couldn’t direct his header on target.

Neville shared his disappointment at the Englishman on Sky Sports commentary.

“Oh Marcus,” Neville exclaimed. “You’ve closed your eyes, because you’ve thought the keeper is coming to hit you. If he just concentrates, doesn’t worry about the goalkeeper, he scores.”

The former-United captain explained that he would have expected Rashford to ride the fear of the tall frame of Courtois rushing out.

“Never would have had Marcus Rashford down as someone who would shirk it or close his eyes thinking he would get a knock,” Neville said.

Rashford’s failure to take the chance was disappointing, particularly as it was United’s best opportunity of the game. But Courtois is an imposing figure for any striker, young, old, tall or small.

United shouldn’t have created just one clear chance, though, which is a more important point that Rashford not being able to convert the first-half cross.
