Jose Mourinho has hit out at Antonio Conte for running straight onto the pitch following Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
The Italian, who refused to make eye contact with Mourinho as the pair shook hands before the game, cut an animated, almost manic figure on the touchline as Alvaro Morata’s header consigned Man United to their second defeat of the 2017/18 campaign.
Following the full time whistle, Conte went straight towards the referee before congratulating his players, leaving Mourinho to shake hands with the assistant coaches.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho made it clear that he wasn’t planning on chasing after his opposite number at full time.
Make no mistake: playing against Mourinho will always be Conte’s cup final for however long he lasts at Chelsea.
The Portuguese is a master at getting under the skin of rival bosses and his recent comments about other managers complaining about injuries has clearly pushed Conte over the edge, even though Mourinho never actually explicitly named him.
Conte deservedly emerged victorious on Sunday, but his temperament during and after the game was hardly reflective of a man who looked in control. He looks restless – erratic, even. And that may have a percolating effect on his side as the season goes on.
Mourinho, on the other hand, has seen this all before, and will make sure this set-back doesn’t go to waste.
