Jose Mourinho: These two players deserve a week off from Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho plans on resting two first team players during the upcoming international break.

Most of the Red Devils’ footballers will be out on international duty but the few remaining will be expected to continue coming in for training.

In truth, the international break couldn’t have come at a better time for United as the team currently struggle to put together a decent run of form.

A loss against Chelsea will be easy to forget after the run of international fixtures and Mourinho’s men can regroup and fire back against their rivals.

Romelu Lukaku is probably the player who currently needs rest more than any of his teammates but Jose will be giving a week off to two other players as the striker represents his country.

Speaking to MUTV, Mourinho said: “The international break means the majority of the players fly now from London to their countries.

“They all disappear and then we have a couple who aren’t selected for their national team, like [Chris] Smalling and [Ander] Herrera and they really deserve, after so many matches, to have a week off which I’m going to give them.”

Chris Smalling and Ander Herrera both featured in the 1-0 loss to Chelsea which helped open the gap between the two Manchester clubs to eight points.

It still is November but it would take some run of form to help close the gap before the end of the season with Manchester City looking unstoppable at the moment.

Smalling played in his a back three alongside Eric Bailly and Phil Jones but despite the additional numbers in defence, couldn’t keep a clean sheet.

Although many would expect an added presence in defence would make a team more solid, United looked clumsier than ever as their inexperience in the formation showed against the Premier League champions.

Herrera meanwhile, played alongside Nemanja Matic but put in an anonymous display as Tiemoue Bakayoko absolutely dominated the Spaniard.
