Anthony Martial has talked about the whole commotion about him not smiling at Manchester United during an interview over the weekend.

The young Frenchman has a reputation of appearing too serious and never really seeming to be entirely happy even when scoring a goal.

Martial’s apparent lack of smiles has been a hot topic of discussion on social media amongst fans, so much so that the player had to address it himself.

Anthony has been in fine form for the Red Devils so far this season with six goals and four assists to his name so far, earning him a recall to the French senior international team.

Speaking to SFR Sport, he said: “Maybe I smile a bit more now, I had a few problems in my life, but now that’s over. Now I’m really focused on my football and I’m happy to play.

“Really, if you see me in a group, you’ll see I’m one of the first guys to laugh. Off the pitch, I’m a bit shy, I don’t show my emotions that much, but I’m happy, even if you don’t see me smile, I’m still happy.

“Maybe on the pitch it’s because I’m focused. I’ll try and smile more, but it wouldn’t be natural if I forced it.”

The striker turned winger is clearly focused as ever and has been behind himself a rather frustrating season last year.

The ‘myth’ that the youngster doesn’t smile is an unusual one that started amongst fans but so long as he continues scoring, no one should really care whether there’s a smile on his face or not.

Martial has plenty to be happy about at the moment and will be hoping to keep up his good form in order to earn himself a spot in France’s World Cup squad for the summer.

With fierce competition in one of their best generations, Anthony will have to have a special season to squeeze into a strong French squad.

At Manchester United there’s less competition but his friendly rival Marcus Rashford is clearly Jose Mourinho’s favourite at the moment.

However, if Martial keeps putting in strong displays, it’ll be tough to ignore him any longer and Mourinho will be forced to hand him the starts he deserves.
