Manchester United vs Newcastle United: Potential XI with Scot McTominay

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United’s biggest stumbling during a challenging October period undoubtedly revolved around the options – or lack thereof – in midfield.

Jose Mourinho was forced to call upon Ander Herrera and Nemaja Matic as a midfield pivot and it culminated in his side failing to replicate the thrust and innovation going forward that hallmarked the early stages of their campaign.

Supporters will be therefore delighted that both Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba are both back to full fitness, although the latter won’t be risked against Rafa Benitez’s men.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for Saturday’s clash with Scott McTominay and Marouane Fellaini joining Matic in midfield.

United are back at Old Trafford following a disappointing visit to Stamford Bridge and an international break that felt like an eternity, and supporters will expect a dominant display to compliment three points.

Placing McTominay, who has shown an impressive capacity to play through the lines, alongside the powerful Belgian would serve as a much-needed statement of attacking intent, putting midfield pair Jonjo Shelvey and Issac Hayes under pressure whilst Matic controls proceedings further back.

Mourinho has been reluctant to employ a midfield three so far this season but he could very well look combine Fellaini’s impactful presence with the youthful zeal offered by McTominay – who has already impressed against Swansea City and Benfica – to unpick Newcastle at the weekend.
