Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has praised his preferred midfield duo Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba for their leadership qualities in the win vs Newcastle United.
The Red Devils fell behind at Old Trafford with the away side’s intense start catching the players off guard.
An early goal seemed to spell disaster for United but the home team responded well and turned the result around before half time.
The second half also saw Mourinho’s men add two more goals to the result to complete a comeback win that read as a comfortable 4-1 result.
The Portuguese manager reserved special praise for his team’s best midfielders in Matic and Pogba who both impressed heavily during the match.
According to Chronicle Live, Jose said: “I think good leadership by Paul [Pogba] and Nemanja [Matic] in that area and then we start producing and, of course, to score in the first half was very important because it took away from us the pressure of being behind and playing from home.”
Pogba in particular managed to grab a goal and an assist on his return from injury, proving just how crucial he is to the club.
In his absence Manchester United struggled to put any sort of winning run together and fans were hugely excited by his presence on the pitch.
Head and shoulders above United’s other midfielders, Mourinho’s then world record fee on Paul is starting to look more like a bargain by the day.
Matic had an impressive set of games when the Frenchman wasn’t available, which is a credit to the Serbian but it was clear that his partners offered nothing crucial to the team.
Nemanja almost single handedly held the team together during their tough moments this season and is gaining due credit for his displays.
With these two players in their side consistently once more, the Red Devils can look to get their title challenge back on track.
