Jose Mourinho on Henrikh Mkhitaryan match-day omission from squad

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained why Henrikh Mkhitaryan missed out on the club’s 4-1 comeback win vs Newcastle.

The Red Devils conceded early at Old Trafford and faced huge pressure to turn the result around but managed to do so superbly.

With Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo all returning to the match-day squad, many didn’t even realise that Mkhitaryan was missing.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku also all started together in what is a rare occurrence, distracting fans from the Armenian’s absence.

Henrikh has had a dip in form since his fiery start to the season and it appears as though he was dropped because of that but Mourinho has since explained a different reason.

Talking to BT Sport before the game, Jose discussed the former Dortmund man’s omission, insisting that he was left out only because of a ‘tactical decision’.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s poor displays in recent games had left many fans calling for him to be dropped for academy product Jesse Lingard.

Lingard managed to start to impress keen observers and they insisted on the Englishman starting consistently after his goalscoring display against Swansea in the League Cup.

Apparently though it was not enough to convince Jose Mourinho who perhaps sees Jesse only as a good squad option.

Either way, Mkhitaryan was dropped finally for the match vs Newcastle and it didn’t seem as though United missed him.

Pogba’s return from injury may spark some good form out of Henrikh once more but the question is when will he get his chance again?
