Ashley Young in the form of his life after stunning double against Watford, claims Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho admitted his delight at Ashley Young’s recent performances as the Englishman scored two goals of remarkable quality against Watford.

Manchester United had been on the back foot against the Hornets on Tuesday night before Young struck the ball on a half-volley and cleanly powered the ball past Heurelho Gomes from outside the box.

Minutes later, Young scored an even better strike, curling a glorious free-kick past Gomes to leave the Watford goalkeeper stunned for the second time in quick succession. Mourinho admitted he was surprised to see Young take the free-kick, but was glad he had been allowed to by Paul Pogba.

Ashley Young trains at free-kicks and his conversion rate in training is good, so it was good he had the confidence to try it, after scoring the first goal,” Mourinho explained.

“I was surprised that Paul Pogba gave him permission.”

It’s lucky Pogba did. He was also standing over the ball as Young vied for the chance to take the central set piece.

Mourinho went on to say that Young is impressing him hugely. He’s now 32 and his contract at United is coming to an end. There have been talks over a new deal, but nothing has been signed yet. Mourinho clearly wants him to stay, though.

“At his age, Young’s playing better than ever and I couldn’t be more happy with him,” the Portuguese said of Young, who has made the left-back position his own since returning from injury in mid-September.
