Arsene Wenger has made it clear that Mesut Ozil is fully committed to the cause at Arsenal amid speculation surrounding a potential move to Manchester United.
Talks over a new contract at the Emirates appear to be going nowhere and Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen on signing the playmaker on a free next summer.
Wenger has recently ruled out a January move for Ozil but didn’t rule out the prospect of him leaving over the summer.
But the Frenchman, speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash with Man United, noted that the German’s head would not be elsewhere against Mourinho’s men.
“That’s all speculation, you cannot interfere with that,” he said.
“I think Mesut Ozil, through his attitude, there’s only one way to show how much you’re committed, that’s your attitude on the pitch and when you see him play one thing you cannot question is the way he wants to play for the team.
“They [Ozil and Alexis Sanchez] are [committed]. Let’s first go to Saturday and then after January we see what happens there but I spoke about that in our last press conference.”
We remain very much in the dark when it comes to Ozil’s future, or where he really wants to be, but Wenger’s tone over the last few weeks seems to suggest that he won’t be at the club beyond this season.
But we will have to put that prospect on hold for now. On Saturday, the German will be on the opposite side and, worryingly, bang in the middle of a dangerously good patch of form.
Mourinho continues to lack a reliable, truly world class No.10 and supporters will just hope that the side he fields at the Emirates don’t let Ozil remind them of what they are sorely missing at this moment in time.
