Manchester United’s Chris Smalling took the time out with the club’s official channel to discuss the team’s perfect week.
The Red Devils faced tricky fixtures away from home vs in form Watford and unbeaten at the Emirates Arsenal.
Jose Mourinho though and his players successfully navigated through both matches, securing vital wins to keep up the pressure on league leaders Manchester City.
The win against Arsenal in particular was pleasing to fans, especially as it was academy product Jesse Lingard who scored a brace in a 3-1 win.
Captain for the day Antonio Valencia was also on the scoresheet and although Smalling and his teammates couldn’t keep a clean sheet, the team defended well as a collective unit.
Speaking to MUTV, Chris said: “I think that’s down to our tactical work and us being able to be strong.
“They probably had about four strikers on the pitch so it was a case of digging in and making sure, even the attacking players, were doing their job and everyone to a man was brilliant.
“I think Watford were going into our game on Tuesday on a great run of form and Arsenal, I don’t think they’ve lost at home like we haven’t, so I don’t think we could have asked for anything more. It’s been a great week.”
Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof were also alongside the Englishman, helping keep an attacking Arsenal at bay.
Jose Mourinho’s need for tactical flexibility helped United overcome Arsenal, particularly in the early stages as they matched the Gunners’ formation but played with two strikers instead.
The formation’s success saw Wenger try to regain control of the match by changing his own team’s formation and of course Mourinho was not slow to matters, tweaking things in response successfully as he team ran out 3-1 winners.
