Luke Shaw’s fitness situation brings back memories of Wayne Rooney, claims Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes has compared Luke Shaw to Manchester United great Wayne Rooney in terms of the youngster’s fitness as a player.

The BT Sport pundit was commenting as Shaw made his first start for Man United in many months against CSKA Moscow in a 2-1 win in the UEFA Champions League.

Shaw impressed as the Reds secured top position in Group A, but Scholes spoke pre-match about the similarities between Shaw and Scholes.

Questioned as to why Shaw’s United career has stuttered since he joined for £30m from Southampton in 2014, Scholes said, “it’s difficult to say [why that’s happened.”

“We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes. I don’t think he lives his life as clean as he possibly should do,” Scholes claimed.

“He looks like a player who needs to be playing every week. We had Wayne Rooney who was a player who missed a couple of games and you knew, didn’t you?

“He’s not looking after himself right, he needs to be playing all the time. I think Luke Shaw is exactly the same.”

Shaw was one of England’s brightest talents at the time of his move, and his form in Louis van Gaal‘s second season at United was sublime before a horrific double leg-break prevented him from continuing that throughout the year.

Scholes, backed up by former-England internationals Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard, said he was desperate to see Shaw succeed at United.

“I hope there’s a future for him because a couple of years ago, I thought we were signing possibly the best left-back in the world,” Scholes said.
