Arsene Wenger confirms Arsenal are still in contract talks with Manchester United target Mesut Ozil

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are still in the process of negotiating with Mesut Ozil over a new contract amid rumours of a potential move to Manchester United.

The German’s contract expires at the end of the season and will be free to speak with other clubs next month.

Reports have suggested that Jose Mourinho, who developed a strong working relationship with the player at Real Madrid, was interested in bringing him to Old Trafford over the summer.

And Wenger, when asked about how talks with Ozil were progressing, was notably ambiguous in his response.

“Negotiations as always are going on with everybody,” he said. “Our door is always open. For the rest, I can’t tell you much more.”

Talks over a new deal have been underway since March and hardly any progress is reported to have been made. You sense that, just like with Marouane Fellaini, the entire ordeal would have been resolved by now if he was fixed on remaining at the Emirates.

But Mourinho cannot let that happen. One clear deficit plaguing his side at the moment comes in the form of a complete lack of reliable No.10s with the capacity to make that role their own.

Manchester City have Kevin de Bruyne; Tottenham Hotspur have Christian Eriksen; Liverpool have Philipe Coutinho; Chelsea have Eden Hazard; and Arsenal, at least for now, have Ozil.

Man United, on the other hand, appear to fluctuate between Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – two players who simply don’t come close to the above calibre. Needless to say: Mourinho needs to go all out in order to change that.
