Jose Mourinho told to sign Willian instead of Mesut Ozil by Ray Wilkins

Manchester United must forget about signing Mesut Ozil and go for Chelsea’s Willian, according to Ray Wilkins.

The former-Man United and Chelsea man has insisted that Willian’s worth ethic makes him a more likely candidate to join the Reds in January or next summer.

Ozil is out of contract at Arsenal next summer, meaning he could sign a deal with United in January.

But the World Cup-winning German doesn’t work hard enough to play for Mourinho, Wilkins has suggested.

“Mesut Ozil won’t go to Old Trafford because he doesn’t have the work ethic that Mourinho looks for in his players,” Wilkins told Sporting Bet.

“I actually see Willian as being the likely player to head to Old Trafford.

“Jose is an enormous admirer of Willian and he would be a special signing for United, but I pray that Chelsea don’t let him go.”

United took Nemanja Matic from Chelsea last season for around £40m in one of the more surprising move’s of the transfer window. No one could quite understand why the Premier League champions sold a key midfielder to a team in their own league.

He’s been superb at Old Trafford so far, the most consistent player for United. Could United take another player off Chelsea? It seems unlikely.

“Ozil needs to go back to Germany, enjoy his football again and get around the pitch as he likes doing.

“In the Premier League, you’re expected to work hard defensively for your team, and I don’t think Mesut does that enough.”

There is a myth about Ozil’s work ethic. He often works harder than many other players in the side, but his relaxed demeanour and role in the team means that doesn’t come across.

Think back to Dimitar Berbatov at United. Playing, he looked lazy, but that was his job, that was his style, that’s why he had success.

Ozil gets criticism where his Arsenal teammates do not, the scapegoat for defeats despite being one of the best two players at the club.

Either player would improve United, but Mourinho has managed both so knows what he would be getting.
Wilkins has also criticised Gunners boss Arsene Wenger for not cashing in on his German star in the summer.
