A January move for Antoine Griezmann or another top player is a definite possibility for Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has revealed.

The Portuguese didn’t buy a single player in last season’s January transfer window, though he offloaded winger Memphis Depay to Olympique Lyonnais for more than £20m and midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin to fellow Premier League side Everton for around £14m.

Mourinho’s Man United have been linked with Griezmann, who will be allowed to leave Atletico Madrid when he chooses, and others including Gareth Bale of Real Madrid.

“I’m not a big defender of the January market but there are players and situations that sometimes you have the chance to do and you shouldn’t lose that chance,” Mourinho said, not specifically referencing a specific player but clearly speaking of a player of that ilk.

“I don’t like the January market. But if you can buy a player that you would buy in June and you have the chance to get him a few months before then great.”

United’s squad has coped well with injuries and suspensions this season, with Paul Pogba an obviously irreplaceable player. Spells on the touchline for Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly have been dealt with in defence.

There is no burning need to buy players in January, but with Henrikh Mkhitaryan linked with a move away in recent weeks, Mourinho may look for a replacement. Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, who is out of contract at the Emirates next summer, is another player heavily linked.
