Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that he knew beforehand that taking on the Red Devils would be a difficult job.
Mourinho joined United after unsuccessful attempts from managers David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal respectively.
Moyes was initially tasked with continuing the team’s dominance in the Premier League after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
After his short tenure was ended, the board signed Dutchman Van Gaal who impressed as the manager of his national team.
After an optimistic season, Louis fell short of the standards and Jose was tasked with restoring order to Manchester United; a job he deemed as ‘not an easy’ one.
Speaking in his pre-match conference, the Portuguese said: “We are second, this is where we are, not first and not third.
“We take one match at a time, let’s see where we are at the end of the season. I signed a three year contract because that was the time that myself and the board decided to be my contract at that time.
“I knew that it wouldn’t be an easy job, I had a similar experience before in huge historic clubs.
“In big clubs people look to the history of the club and not the current moment, that is difficult.
“When I go to Real Madrid, they were in a difficult moment, no titles for many years, it was hard but good for my development as a manager.”
Compared to Madrid, United are in the hands of an older, wiser Jose Mourinho who has done fairly well since joining the side.
In his first season in charge, the Red Devils won the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League to compensate for their poor performances in the Premier League.
The League Cup was an added bonus to the season but the main glory was in winning the Europa League, a competition that allowed Mourinho and his men to feature in this season’s Champions League.
It was the board’s minimum expectation and Jose met it through the unconventional way of winning a trophy which delighted Manchester United fans even more.
This season the focus had originally been on improving on last year’s accomplishments but a great start to the season saw the targets shift.
Suddenly it seemed as though United were in a title challenge and although that hasn’t mathematically concluded, the club’s determined fans may have to be a little more patient.
