Reports emerged last week suggesting that Ernesto Valverde was lining up Blind, who has made 11 starts this season, as a replacement for Javier Mascherano next summer.
The Dutchman’s contract expires in the summer and he reportedly expects to be moved on by Jose Mourinho at the conclusion of the 2017/18 season.
And according to Spanish media outlet Marca, the Barcelona board are lining up Blind for a free transfer once his contract – which shows no signs of being renegotiated – expires in June.
Blind’s time at Old Trafford has appeared to have run its course following a generally positive three years, with even long-term outcast Luke Shaw now ahead of him in Mourinho’s pecking order after an underwhelming few months – crystallised by that horrific display against FC Basel in November.
Mourinho may indeed be planning a much needed full-back revolution next summer – not too dissimilar to what Manchester City have done with the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Danilo and even Fabian Delph – and Blind, who would supplement Barcelona’s passing style nicely, feels like a necessary component for expediting that process.
