Manchester United make ‘serious enquiry’ for Lazio’s Stefan De Vrij: report

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij and have apparently stepped things up by making a ‘serious enquiry’ for the player.

The centre-back was part of a huge transfer window rumour during the summer with United seemingly keen on the Dutchman but eventually Jose Mourinho signed Victor Lindelof instead.

Reports cooled but have kicked off again once more with the January transfer window coming up just around the corner.

Stefan’s contract with the Italian side ends next summer and it appears as though Mourinho is tempted with signing him on a free.

Reports claim that the Portuguese is even considering reinforcing his team with De Vrij in January itself and will sign him for ‘cheap’ in order to beat off competition from other clubs.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Red Devils aren’t the only ones keeping tabs on Stefan de Vrij with four other clubs including Inter also making ‘serious enquiries’.

Manchester United currently have an abundance of centre-backs in terms of numbers but may be lacking quality or fitness.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and youth academy product Axel Tuanzebe all represent the club’s current options.

However, the first four players have had their fair share of injury problems with the two Englishman in particularly struggling for fitness throughout their career at United.

Rumours are that Jose Mourinho is fed up on having unreliable players despite rating Jones and Rojo highly.

Lindelof and Bailly are both purchases that the Portuguese made himself and it’s likely that Mourinho is willing to dip his hand into the transfer market once more, especially if he can sign Stefan for free.
