Liverpool are leading the race to sign Schalke midfielder and Manchester United target Leon Goretzka ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho wants to add midfield reinforcements over January and has tracked the 22-year-old closely this season.
The midfielder has been a regular presence in the side since 2013 and several European clubs have taken note of his performances over the last few months, with the German taking up a notably talismanic role under manager Domenico Tedesco.
But according to Football London‘s Tashan Deniran-Alleyne, Liverpool have emerged as a favourites to sign Goretzka in January.
Interest in Goretzka has only picked up over the last few months but anyone who watches the Bundesliga will be able to tell you that the German has been impressing since the age of 18 with his direct, powerful style on the ball.
But it looks as if Mourinho has started to look elsewhere as he seeks to find a more suitable replacement for Michael Carrick, who looks set to hang up his boots in June.
While Jurgen Klopp looks to add yet another attacking midfield player to his side, Mourinho has identified the likes of Julian Weigl and Jorginho – less attacking but far more dextrous with the ball at their feet – as options instead.
