Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson has claimed that the club don’t need to rush back key man and striker Romelu Lukaku from his injury.
The Belgian forward went off the pitch in the early stages of the disappointing draw vs Southampton after suffering what seemed to be a serious knock.
Carried off the field, most fans expected Lukaku to be absent from future fixtures for some time but Jose Mourinho has reassured everyone that his exclusion from the squad vs Everton was just precautionary.
Anthony Martial started in his place for the match vs the Toffees and managed to get on the scoresheet, impressing particularly in the second half.
Atkinson believes that due to the Frenchman’s performance there’s no real need to risk Romelu’s health by rushing him back to match fitness.
Speaking to MUTV, Ron said: “There’s no real rush to bring back Lukaku if they don’t want to for the weekend [Friday night against Derby County].
“You have seen two lads there do the job and there is Rashford for support as well.”
Romelu Lukaku started his career at the Red Devils in fine form before dwindling with the club’s own poor run in the Premier League.
Although statistically he’s doing fine, particularly in his debut season, fans have still grown frustrated with him due to their own high expectations.
The former Everton man has been known to have a bit of a loose touch and this often leads to United’s attacks breaking down, upsetting supporters.
Overall though, he has had as good a start as anyone can really ask for, particularly since he’s made the jump to a bigger club where everything he does is scrutinised.
With half the season done, 15 goals and four assists are stats any striker would be proud of and Romelu has nothing to hide from.
