Bayern Munich confirm interest in Manchester United target Leon Goretzka

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed that the Bundesliga champions will make attempts to sign Manchester United target and FC Schalke midfielder Leon Goreztka.

The club has been closely monitoring the midfielder, who broke into the Schalke side as a teenager, ever since he impressed at the Confederations Cup over the summer.

Liverpool and Arsenal have also identified the 22-year-old as a prime target, with the former reportedly leading the race to secure his services.

But Salihamidzic has confirmed that Bayern are set to pursue the midfielder over the January transfer window.

“Leon Goretzka is a great player, that’s clear. He is a Schalke player and we obviously respect that. But he is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him,” he said.

When Bayern get involved in the transfer market, there is usually only one outcome. The German champions are unique in the sense that their name is hardly linked with other players unless there is substance behind it, and the same goes for players moving the other way. They even released a statement last summer when Robert Lewandowski was linked with Chelsea and Man United.

And Goretzka looks like the perfect mould for Bayern: neat on the ball, well rounded in his approach, young and German, blessed with attacking talent. There is no country that looks after its young players better.

Mourinho, meanwhile, will have to look elsewhere, with Jorginho, Leander Dendoncker, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Julian Weigl and Carlos Soler all mentioned as potential options.
