Michael Carrick has once again demonstrated his class with a message to David Silva, whose prematurely born son is “fighting for his life”.
The Spaniard, who has been exceptional this season, released a statement earlier this week revealing that his newborn son, Mateo, had been born “extremely” prematurely and was “fighting every day” in a Valencia hospital.
Tensions have been high between the two clubs ever since a heated exchange in the Old Trafford tunnel following Manchester City’s 2-1 derby win last month.
But Carrick, a father of two, has adopted a welcome change of tone and took to social media to send a message of support to the Silva family.
“Some things are much more important than football,” he wrote. “All the best to you and your family David, especially to your little man.”
One can only imagine what Silva and his wife are going through on a day-by-day basis, especially with the Spaniard in a different country as his first born child fights for his life – somehow still managing to produce scintillating performances at the same time.
He has always been one of the few Man City players I’ve always admired: never complaining, deeply respectful, and always delight to watch. He is a genuine credit to the beautiful game and probably the best player, pound for pound, ever seen at the Ethiad. We can only hope he receives some good news soon.
