Manchester United may not have such an easy go at Antoine Griezmann despite Barcelona recently signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool for a hefty sum.
The Brazilian star’s transfer was only recently confirmed with some United fans believing it meant that Griezmann was now uncontestedly theirs to attempt to sign.
The French international was hugely linked to a move to the Red Devils in the summer transfer window but nothing transpired after Atletico Madrid were banned from any activity and the player deciding to remain loyal to his club.
Now that the ban has ended, Antoine is available once more but Barcelona have ignited their interest in him to compete with Jose Mourinho’s side.
Sky Sports Spanish transfer expert Guillem Balague believes that despite spending a huge chunk of their budget on Coutinho, Barcelona are willing to let players go to lure in the Madrid man.
According to the Sunday Express, Guillem said: “Barcelona have been flirting with Griezmann, Griezmann likes the idea of going to Barcelona. £100m is what he’s going to cost, it’s £200m now but from July 1 it will be £100m.
“They think that they will have the money but to be on the safe side they need to sell about eight players and some of them are big names. They are going to get rid of players now and in the summer to balance the numbers and the wages.”
A winger has been publicly stated as one of Mourinho’s targets since the summer transfer window and although links between the two clubs have cooled, it’s believed that the Portuguese manager is still willing to get his man.
Although Antoine Griezmann admitted in the summer that a move to Old Trafford was very likely, temptations to join a reinvigorated Barcelona side may be too much to turn down.
They currently lead the Spanish La Liga table by six points and with a game in a hand to Atletico Madrid could quickly race ahead of their competition.
How the Madrid faithful react to Griezmann’s transfer to their rivals is yet to be seen but perhaps nothing will come of it should the talented, versatile attacker choose Manchester United instead.
