Robbie Savage praises Manchester United’s versatile player Ashley Young

Former footballer and current pundit Robbie Savage has hailed Manchester United’s Ashley Young, comparing him to one of Arsenal’s own defenders.

The veteran has adapted his game to adjust to his new position as a full-back in Jose Mourinho’s side, having been a winger, attacking midfielder and a striker at times earlier on in his career.

Young’s versatility has often helped him throughout his career but perhaps it’s done so now more than ever having won himself a place in United’s starting XI.

The club’s left-back issues have been widely publicised and it’s there that the Englishman has shined brightest for his team.

Savage has given Ashley some long overdue praise, having done well enough to earn himself an international cap for the country’s senior side.

According to Sport Review, Robbie said: “He has done OK at Arsenal as a left-back or wing-back. I think Ashley Young has done more at left-back than Kolasinac this season. He has done well for Manchester United this season.”

Not only has Ashley Young adapted his game to become a capable defender but he’s also shown that he’s able to play on either flank as a full-back.

With Antonio Valencia absent through injury, the pacy former winger took over the Ecuadorian with ease, making sure Manchester United didn’t miss a player who was one of their best performers last season.

Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and even Matteo Darmian represent the club’s options in the left-back position but it’s Young who’s risen above all of them.

Rojo has proven himself a more adept centre-back, Darmian has been uninspiring and Blind isn’t a player one would normally link with Mourinho.

Only Shaw constitutes as Ashley’s only real competition at left-back and given how the youngster has performed recently, he may give the more experienced player a run for his money.
