Manchester United are now confident of beating Manchester City to the signing of Alexis Sanchez this month, according to numerous sources.
While the Independent state that the Reds are now “considerable favourites” to sign Alexis ahead of their local title rivals, Sky Sports suggest Man United are confident of completing a deal for the forward.
The 29-year-old has cut a controversial figure as of late at Arsenal, having come close to joining Man City in the summer and his performances and attitude frustrating some at the Emirates.
In the last few days, interest from United and Jose Mourinho has become public, with the club supposedly working on a deal for the Chilean since the summer, according to ESPN FC’s Mark Ogden.
Sanchez seemed certain to join Pep Guardiola’s City, with a conclusion to the deal either expected this month or in the summer when his contract runs out at Arsenal and he’ll be able to join other clubs on a free transfer.
But United may snatch Sanchez away from City’s grasp. Mourinho is willing to meet Arsenal’s £35m asking price as well as pay Sanchez’s high agent fees of near £10m whereas City have baulked at such figures.
Guardiola wished only to pay £20m in January or wait until the summer. The player could well choose to wait until this summer to join City and be reunited with Guardiola, who managed him while at FC Barcelona.
However, with Di Marzio reporting that United have agreed a deal in principle with both the player and his agent and beINSports saying that he’ll cost £30m, it seems a deal could be close.
