Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has explained what the players worked on in training during their warm weather break in Dubai, UAE.
The Red Devils travelled to the United Arab Emirates in the hopes of having some time away from rainy Manchester in order to recharge their batteries.
Jose Mourinho’s side had just gone through the rigorous Christmas period of fixtures and had decided to make use of the break in fixtures to train in Dubai.
Shaw was one of the players present as the Portuguese manager took a huge chunk of his squad away, returning just in time to face Stoke in the Premier League.
England’s top division doesn’t have an official winter break as other European divisions do, often garnering criticism from foreign and local players and managers alike.
According to the Metro, Luke said to Manchester United’s official website: “We were mainly focused on what we were doing with the ball. Not really defensively, it was when we have the ball, which areas we want to go to.
“It’s all about moving the ball quickly and he [Jose Mourinho] was getting that drummed into our heads.”
Luke Shaw‘s words raise some of the issues fans have pointed out about Manchester United’s season so far as the club attempt to close a huge gap to fierce rivals Manchester City.
Mourinho’s side have often been criticised for being ponderous and slow in possession at times, particularly when Paul Pogba has been absent from the starting XI.
The French playmaker is typically the player who has United ticking, proving his worth this season since his transfer from Juventus.
With the club unable to break down stubborn opposition defences at times, it makes sense for Jose to be working on the players’ abilities to move the ball quicker.
United are also known to hit teams on the counter attack and perhaps the Portuguese manager is aiming to do so more regularly or efficiently.
