Manchester United youngster Luke Shaw has claimed that he always knew he would be ready for when his chance in the first team would come.
The England international hasn’t had the best of times under Jose Mourinho’s management but he’s finally been given the opportunity to impress in recent weeks.
Shaw’s time at Old Trafford can be described as unlucky but under the Portuguese’s tenure, he’s suffered a mixture of injuries, poor form and reportedly attitude problems.
Fitness and mentality issues have been admitted with his previous managers Louis Van Gaal and Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton.
However, Ashley Young‘s recent ban has come at the perfect time for the left-back to perform and he’s taken the chance with both hands.
According to Goal, Luke said to United Review: “I’ve always, especially recently, felt really confident, and I knew I was in a good moment fitness-wise with the work I’d been doing. And I knew when my chance would come, I’d be ready.
“I just want to kick on now. I’m not looking back, I’m only looking forward. I’m feeling good and it’s been really nice to be back on the pitch and enjoying having game time.
“The last few weeks personally have been good but, as a whole and as a team, we’ve been disappointed with some of the results [over Christmas]. But I hope there are many more games for me and many more good results for the team as well.”
The left back position has been a bit of a problem area for the Red Devils for a couple of seasons now and it was the original reason why Luke Shaw was brought into the club.
It’s proof of Shaw’s failure to grasp the position for himself that all of the above have had arguably longer runs in the side than he has.
However, he appears to be turning a new leaf and his only true competitor for the position is a former winger in the form of Young.
If Jose Mourinho continues to show faith in him then Luke should be able to hold onto the left-back spot even when Ashley returns from his suspension.
