Alexis Sanchez makes Manchester United contenders for the Champions League, claims Norman Whiteside

Ex-Manchester United man Norman Whiteside claims his former-side could win the UEFA Champions League this season due to a good January transfer window.

Whiteside, a fan favourite at Old Trafford throughout the 1980s, suggested that the combination of Jose Mourinho’s European experience and the addition of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal could lead to European glory for the Reds.

Man United haven’t lifted the UEFA Champions League since 2008 when they won the double, also being crowned Premier League champions in the peak season of the club’s most successful ever period.

Sanchez is expected to sign for Mourinho and United on Monday or Tuesday with the club awaiting work permits for he and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who will go the other way and join Arsenal in a rare player-swap deal.

“United have a manager who has won the UCL against all the odds before,” Whiteside explained.

“Sanchez will bring that extra bit of magic when they get down to the business end. If the European Cup came back to Old Trafford then that would put City back in their place.”

“City have got to win the title from here, but after signing Alexis Sanchez I can also see United winning the Champions League. Sanchez is a special player who can make the difference in the biggest of game.”

The league title appears to be too far gone for United. City are currently 12 points ahead of Mourinho’s side, who dropped points over the festive period to allow their rivals to steam ahead.

However, United topped their Champions League group with ease and could prove a significant threat to City, PSG and the regular European giants going for European club football’s biggest prize this season.

The set of teams in the tournament this year is relatively weak, with Real Madrid in poor form, FC Barcelona not as strong, Juventus similar. City and PSG are often tipped as favourites, but United may come into the question after the arrival of Sanchez is confirmed in the coming days.
