Jose Mourinho has expressed his delight with Alexis Sanchez after the Chilean produced a ‘Man of the Match’ debut during Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Yeovil Town on Friday night.
The club’s new No.7, who arrived on Monday, immediately took hold of proceedings with some impressive pieces of link-up play and darting runs all over the pitch.
He helped set up Man United’s opening goal before bursting away on the break and claiming his first assist with a perfectly weighted pass for Ander Herrera to kill the game early in the second half.
And Mourinho, speaking after the game, hailed his new signing for making such an emphatic impact just days after joining the club.
“He is a fantastic addition like Ander (Herrera) everyone is happy he comes,” he said. “Good players want good players and Alexis is a great player for us. And the question is going to be who is going to be out where is he going to play?”
“It’s not about that for us, it’s about having a fantastic group of attacking players and he is another one with a little bit more maturity and experience. For example in the second half for the counter attack for the second goal is a decision that a player like Marcus is still too nervous to make that kind of decision so he will bring us this extra maturity and class.
“He was keen to play and I knew it would be difficult and not an easy one for him but I’m happy with his performance.”
His first piece of play in a United shirt was a nutmeg, and it set the tone for what was a men-against-boys type of performance at Huish Park.
Bigger tests lie just around the corner but Sanchez nonetheless demonstrated emphatically that he has raised the bar for United’s attacking arsenal this season.
The way he attacked Yeovil was not just impressive in its ruthless regularity but also in how multifaceted it was, the Chilean seemingly picking the ball up wherever he pleased before moving play forward.
It remains early days, of course, but this was a performance befitting of the No.7 shirt from start to finish.
