Manchester United target Mesut Ozil signs new contract with Arsenal until 2021 – report

Mesut Ozil has put to bed rumours of a potential move to Manchester United by signing a new contract with Arsenal.

The German playmaker’s contract was set to expire in June and talks, which begun in March of last year, didn’t appear to be accelerating.

Arsene Wenger even admitted that he wasn’t sure if Ozil would be at the Emirates next season, prompting reports suggesting that Jose Mourinho, who developed a strong relationship with the German at Real Madrid, was keen on working with him again.

But Arsenal confirmed on Thursday afternoon that their playmaker had extended his contract until 2021, putting to bed any chance of Man United signing him next summer.

I’ll be honest: this is upsetting. Very upsetting, in fact. The way United ruthlessly pinched Alexis Sanchez away from Arsenal added to the feeling that they could pluck Ozil, criminally consigned to Europa League football, in similar fashion.

If you gave me the chance to pick one player to sign it would be the German without a doubt. As Mourinho himself has noted before: he makes the ball smile.

But he has pledged his allegiance to the Gunners and, while I don’t understand it at all, fair play to him. Committing to one club for so long, especially as a player of such unquestionable talent, is extremely rare in today’s climate, and my only hope is that Arsenal fans appreciate him more than they have done in the past.
