Former Chelsea player Frank Lampard has called on Manchester United’s Paul Pogba to acknowledge his defensive responsibilities for the club.
The Frenchman has been under some scrutiny by the media after his so called ‘feud’ with Jose Mourinho was plastered on all the newspapers front pages.
The ‘problems’ initially started when Pogba was substituted during the club’s loss to Tottenham before subsequently being dropped to the bench for the win over Huddersfield in the Premier League.
He returned for the match vs Newcastle but was once more substituted before missing the win over Huddersfield in the FA Cup and then starting from the bench in the draw with Sevilla.
Lampard though believes that Mourinho’s ‘issues’ with Paul stem from the player’s inability to be tactically and defensively discipline.
According to The Sport Review, Frank said to the Evening Standard: “I used to play in a three-man midfield mostly, but I was also in a two for the last few years of my time at Chelsea and throughout my England career.
“You know when you go into a bigger game that you have to have extra discipline because of what your opponent can do to you. So no-one can switch off or have moments out of position. It will damage the team.
“Pogba has to recognise that because he has moments of amazing ability on the ball. He just has to learn that defensive side of the game.”
Many fans have acknowledged that the midfielder is incapable of being defensively relied upon and so have called on Jose to absolve his player from the responsibility entirely.
Playing in a 4-3-3 formation with a three man midfield is supposed to serve that purpose and the Portuguese manager has been implementing it in recent matches.
However Paul Pogba has still looked underwhelming and so some supporters believe he’s simply out of form rather than suffering from tactical issues.
Others have pointed to Alexis Sanchez’s arrival as being the reason to the former Juventus man’s struggles in the middle of the park.
The theory is that the Chilean has suddenly become United’s key man and it’s something that Pogba apparently can’t handle.
