Gary Neville believes Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku is under pressure

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that Romelu Lukaku is the one person at the club who is under pressure which is surprising given the circumstances.

The Belgian has come in for huge criticism this season despite scoring 21 goals across all competitions- a tally most people would consider is respectable, especially since it’s still February.

Paul Pogba is another player who is arguably under more pressure, particularly to his manager as Jose Mourinho continues to drop him.

Much was made of the relationship between the pair but United fans will surely hope that whatever is going on is sorted out quickly so the club can perform.

Neville though insists that it’s Lukaku who should be worried about his spot in the starting XI as the club prepare to take on Chelsea.

According to Goal, Gary said to Sky Sports: “My view at the moment is that the one person who is under some pressure is Romelu Lukaku, in terms of his form, and also that Sanchez could go up front, because I’m not sure he’s suited to the right.

“That may allow Marcus to come back into the team. I think Lukaku has done well this season, but I think there comes a point whereby if both he and Alexis Sanchez are not performing to their best, which they are not at the moment, you’d think Sanchez will be moved up top and Lukaku may come out of the team for a few matches.

“It’s not because he’s a bad player, but he could come out of the team, freshen up, see the game differently, and then come back in when others have had a go.”

The Red Devils actually have a number of players who are under pressure along with Romelu and Paul such as Marcus Rashford, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Matteo Darmian and Ander Herrera.

It’s quite telling that three of the aforementioned names are defenders and the pressure on them pretty much down to poor performances.

The same can be said about Rashford and Herrera as well but it’s the Spaniard’s position that is more under threat at Old Trafford.

The Englishman is considered to be a Manchester United gem and is unlikely to be going anywhere anytime soon but he will have to up his form if he wishes to dethrone Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial.
