Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was full of praise for his players following their superb performances vs Chelsea in the Premier League.
The Portuguese manager had Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard to thank for the club’s 2-1 win over the Blues at Old Trafford.
The London club though were the ones who grabbed the opening goal through Willian and United had to complete an inspired come-back win after the break.
Lukaku actually grabbed the equaliser just before half time with Lingard grabbing his goal just 11 minutes after being substituted onto the pitch.
Mourinho though was busy praising a different part of the pitch, focussing on the Red Devils’ midfield for their efforts in the crucial win.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Jose said: “Matic was phenomenal, Pogba played a fantastic game for our midfield. I could speak about our defenders too.
“The mission that Alexis had to be the third attacking player, but also the fourth midfield player. Everyone made a big effort.”
Manchester United had set up in a formation fans aren’t using to seeing the club play in with Jose Mourinho implementing the 4-4-2 diamond shape.
Nemanja Matic was at the base of the diamond, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay were the midfielders and Alexis Sanchez was the tip of the diamond to complete a solid midfield.
It was a bold move given that United hadn’t really ever used the formation but it paid off, providing the players with plenty of positive factors.
Anthony Martial got to play in his preferred position as a striker, Pogba was unshackled a little in the four man midfield and Sanchez got the opportunity to express himself in attacking midfield.
Perhaps most importantly than anything, the Red Devils’ defence was also well protected, allowing the forward players to focus on counter-attacking.
