Ryan Giggs backs Alexis Sanchez to succeed at Manchester United

Ryan Giggs has insisted that Alexis Sanchez will be a top player for Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

The Chilean arrived from Arsenal over the January transfer window in a straight swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan head the other way.

And he has made a decent, yet not spellbinding, start to life at Old Trafford, claiming a goal and two assists.

Speaking earlier this week, Giggs was confident that Sanchez would eventually find his groove in a Man United shirt.

“He’s a top player,” he said. “He’s only scored one goal so far, so I’m sure he’d want to do better than that, but I think he’s done okay.”

“His team-mates are still trying to find out what he likes, what he doesn’t like, the dynamics of the team. Sometimes it fits straight away, sometimes it takes a bit of time.

“I don’t think anyone should be worried about Alexis Sanchez, he’s a top, top player.”

Games against Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Sevilla revealed in glowing terms that it will take time for attacking players to understand the Chilean – how he positions himself, the spaces he likes to take up, the runs he makes, the way his footballing brain works – and form a close-knit partnership with him.

And yet, even at this stage, his sheer quality is there to see. With better finishing from Lukaku he would have claimed a marvellous assist against Sevilla, while his display against Chelsea was an example of the hardworking side to his game.

Very rarely do players immediately click; even the best in the world take time to mesh with new arrivals. Supporters ought to be excited rather than apprehensive over what the Chilean will produce for United in the coming weeks.
